Speaking Points for an Opening Event

The following is a first draft of speaking points I wrote for an opening event.

DANA SOUZA: INTRODUCTION/WELCOME

  • Good morning and welcome to Greenville Tech Ice on Main. I’m Dana Souza, Director of Parks and Recreation of the City of Greenville, and I want to thank you for joining us for the kickoff of the second annual Greenville Tech Ice on Main winter tradition!
  • Joining us today are Mayor Knox White, Dr. Keith Miller, and (XXXXX from the Courtyard Mariott/Windsor Aughtry).  This sensational event would not be possible without these key contributors.

(lead applause)

  • Last winter, Greenville Tech Ice on Main debuted as Greenville’s very own outdoor ice rink.  As one of the most successful outdoor rinks in the Southeast, with over 18,000 skaters and an extended reach of more than 50,000 participants last year, we are pleased that Greenville Tech Ice on Main will be a continued tradition in the city of Greenville!
  • The city of Greenville is so excited to be continuing this fun, family tradition of Greenville Tech Ice on Main for a second year.  Due to the overwhelming support and success this project had last year, we are pleased to again announce the opening of Greenville’s Ice on Main!

(lead applause)

  • From November 23 through January 21, Ice on Main will open for its second season. We hope that you will continue supporting Greenville and enjoy a night out downtown, complete with ice skating in this beautiful rink.
  • For opening remarks, please welcome Mayor Knox White.

(lead applause)

DR KEITH MILLER: GT INVOLVEMENT

  • Thank you, Mayor White.
  • Greenville Technical College was founded in 1962 in order to promote education needed for success among the people of Greenville, and to provide local companies with skilled workers.
  • In our 50th year, we continue to serve the community of Greenville in various ways, including our new community service initiative, Greenville Tech Gives Back.  This initiative consists of faculty, students and staff coming together to work on volunteer service projects throughout the downtown area to improve life of residents and visitors.
  • (Are they still partnering with Habitat Humanity and ticket sales? If so, add: As a sponsor of Ice on Main, we’re very pleased that on four Sundays, a portion of Greenville Tech Ice on Main’s ticket sales will be donated to Habitat for Humanity of Greenville County. )
  • Greenville Tech Ice on Main is a growing tradition that the college will continue to support to promote community involvement as we seek to continue to serve the city of Greenville.
  • Please welcome another partner, XXXXX from Windsor Aughtry Company.

XXXXXX: WINDSOR

  • Thank you, Dr. Miller.
  • On behalf of Windsor Aughtry Company, I want to thank Greenville Tech for their continued support for this event.  I would also like to thank the community for their involvement in the growing tradition of Greenville Tech Ice on Main.
  • I want to share with you for a moment the vision that the city of Greenville had for this space that now, after years of planning, finally contains our very own outdoor ice rink.
  • This space, Main @ Broad, was developed in 2007 as a place for the community to gather during the holiday season.  We had hopes that it would eventually turn into an ice rink, and we are pleased to say that it now does.
  • What you now see before you is Greenville Tech Ice on Main, the final product of many efforts between the Courtyard Marriott and Main @ Broad.  We couldn’t have done it without our partners at the city of Greenville, and of course, Greenville Technical College.
  • Thank you to everyone who continues to make this Greenville holiday tradition successful.
